Rare mother-of-pearl and silver choker

This necklace was made in China for the French market around 1880. Each mother-of-pearl disk is enclosed in a detailed silver (not sterling) filigree mounting and connected by chain. The color varies in different light, but it is very subdued shades of brown, green and rose. The silver, with its patina, is almost a gunmetal shade. The catch has the most detailed filigree of all. The inner row of disks is shorter than the outer row, so that when worn, the necklace will fall perfectly.

This necklace has to be worn to be truly appreciated. It falls beautifully on the neck, and the subtle colors are so rich that they change depending on the colors they are worn with. It’s a “statement” piece, yet it’s very light and comfortable. It’s truly elegant.

Condition: Excellent for its age. One of the disks has a dent, which may have been there when the necklace was made. (See photo. It’s hardly noticeable.) A silver guard chain was added at some point.

Measurements: Necklace length is 18 inches. Each pair of disks measures a little over an inch. Total weight: 72g.

Price: $980.00
