Large sterling silver and carnelian, leaf-motif brooch, c1960
Measuring almost 5 inches in length, this is an impressive brooch. It has the look of leaves and buds coming off a long center branch. It has three bezel-set carnelian cabochons… one large and two small… representing buds. On the back, here is a silver mark and an artist logo, which we could not identify. When we found it in Paris, we were told it was Scandinavian. At first glance, it appears to be a hammered and soldered piece, but closer examination reveals that it was constructed in wax and cast to give that appearance. Both the front and back are nicely detailed and the hinge on the pin is in the style of a safety pin.
This is a great looking piece. It’s both artistic and whimsical. It needs to be worn on sturdy fabric. It would work well on a coat, a large lapel or to hold a shawl in place. You have some flexibility in how you choose to angle it.
Condition: Excellent.
Measurements: The brooch is 4.75 inches long by 2.5 inches wide at the widest point. The weight is 39g.
