Ornate sterling with Sheffield plate and carved horn fish serving set, c1880
This lovely fish serving set was probably not intended for export. It has no markings of any kind. But it’s obviously English Sheffield plate from the end of the 19th century. (It is very common for Sheffield plate not to have hallmarks.) The end caps and collar would be sterling and the knife blade and fork would be plate. The handles are carved horn, giving an attractive spotted effect.
This is a heavy set that has obviously seen a fair share of use but no abuse. It has the minor scuffs you’d expect for its age but no dents or damage. It attracts many compliments in our store because the workmanship and design are quite handsome. It would give a special touch to any fish course.
Condition: Very good.
Measurements: The knife is 14 inches and the fork measures 10.6 inches. Together they weigh 374g.
