Whiting aesthetic movement sterling serving scoop, c1880

Japanese influence dominates the design of this beautiful silver spoon. The design and execution are as good as it gets. Notice the crisp details and the variety of textures on the handle. The engraved design in the bowl indicates that this piece was made early in the aesthetic movement, as this part is more Victorian. The end of the bowl has a flat and wavy contour. In the Victorian tradition, this spoon had a very specific purpose… perhaps serving soft cheese. The back is plain and the spoon has no monogram.

It’s obvious that this spoon saw very little use, since it shows only minor scuffs, probably from cleaning. But it could be a very versatile hors d’oeuvre scoop… in addition to being an exceptional collectors item from Whiting, one of the finest names in American silver.

Condition: Very good.

Measurements: The spoon is 5.75 inches long and weighs 21g
