French art nouveau, brass-plated, water lily chandelier, c1890
Once in a while an antique chandelier comes along that is everything we’re not looking for… but is so wonderful that it just works. This one is all style. As far as we can tell it’s not from an important maker, but it’s beautiful and great from every angle. It has three flowers that take light bulbs and then an assortment of big leaves, twisted branches and buds. It has plenty of patina, but it is probably more interesting looking today than when it was new. It has been completely rewired to meet U.S. standards.
I don’t know if many of these were made back in 1890, but we don’t see many of them today. With renewed appreciation of art nouveau, pieces like this become very desirable… especially the ones that are artistically beautiful, as this one is. This chandelier would be great over a table or in a hallway. The chain and cap are not original, so you can add chain or take some away… whatever works for your space. We can blacken the cap a bit if you’d like.
Condition: Good. Plenty of patina and pitting… but the 100 years of grime have been cleaned off to expose some shiny brass.
Measurements: The chandelier measures 19 inches across at the widest part. Right now it hangs 24 inches from the ceiling.
