Pair of whimsical and wonderful French swan-head sconces, c1880
Although the humor of these swan-head sconces is obvious, they are crafted with serious attention to all the details. The artistry and craftsmanship are first-rate. They are made of heavy, solid brass, and the round plaque in the back is blackened metal with a brass rim. They were probably made originally for candles and electrified later, since the wire runs along the outside of the swan’s neck. There is some noticeable patina on the brass, but in general the brass is still in very good shape. They have been updated for U.S. electricity.
These are very versatile fixtures. They could fit with rustic to fancy décor. They don’t give a lot of light since they only have one candle each. But they are wonderful accent pieces that will work well on either side of a mirror, doorway, etc. They won’t distract but will complement beautifully.
Condition: Excellent.
Measurements: The round back measures 7.25 inches. With a bulb the total sconce is about 12 inches high.
