18th century French dressing table with checkerboard inlay
These wonderful Louis XIV dressing tables occasionally show up at the Paris market, but they usually have inlays of flower motifs or French scroll designs. This dressing table has beautiful inlay of facing satinwood panels trimmed in a checkerboard of ebony and light satinwood. Fully opened, it has a center mirror with a storage well, a writing surface, two drawers and two side wells… one deep and one shallow. Faux drawers create perfect balance by concealing the wells. All the inside parts are covered in beautiful velvet. The back is fully finished and the tapered legs have horizontal streaked inlay all the way down.
This is a very striking piece. It can be used as a dressing table or as a side table. The finished back allows you to put it almost anywhere. In France, it is not considered a sin to repair antique furniture. This piece is in excellent condition, but it is obvious that it has had a few veneer patches over the years. Also the velvet is not original, but it’s not new either. All the repairs have been professionally done and are not very noticeable.
The use of geometric inlay makes this piece very versatile. It mixes well with Biedermeier and many other more modern styles. And it certainly goes well with ornate styles. The proportions and styling are impeccable.
Condition: Excellent (antique).
Measurements: The top of the dressing table when closed measures 29.5 inches wide by 17.75 inches deep. The height is 29.5 inches. You need to allow about 9 inches on both sides for the openings of the wells.
