18K gold, enamel and diamond dragonfly brooch, c1880
This beautiful dragonfly has wings of translucent enamel a jour*. Each wing has a rose-cut diamond, and the body has a single 13 pt, bright, bezel-set, mine-cut diamond. The center diamond is removable! The tail section has 14 small mine-cut diamonds. As you can see from the photos, the whole broach can be taken apart… one of those concepts that made sense in the Victorian era.
This is a wonderful find for dragonfly lovers, as well as anyone who loves the expression of nature in jewels. The workmanship is so fine and detailed, it always gets noticed in our story. It’s a nice size, too… big enough to be noticed but not overwhelming.
*Enamel a jour is a type of very fine enamel work that has no metal backing. The enamel is connected only to the metal design between the enamel sections, allowing light to come through and give the colors a translucent appearance.
Condition: Excellent. The enamel on one of the eyes has a missing part, but you need a magnifying glass to see it. The enamel a jour shows no signs of damage.
Measurements: The wingspan is 2 inches. Total weight: 7g.
