Set of six French aesthetic-movement silver-plated spoons, c1880
These spoons are hallmarked, Armand Frenais, an important silver maker of late 19th century Paris. He made both silver and silver plate. But his silver plate was commissioned by some of the finest hotels in Paris. These spoons were obviously from a private home and have no monogram. They are beautifully decorated on both sides. The front shows a free flowing motif of birds and leaves, while the back has a more formal and classic motif. One of the nicest parts is the back of the bowl, where the stem ends in a flower/starburst design. The bowl is gold vermeil front and back, but the gold does not go over the flower on the back of the bowl.
These spoons are typical coffee-spoon size and a generous weight, so one could find many uses for them… dinner spoon, dessertspoon and coffee, of course. Because of the rich ornamentation on them, we think they are nice to use as an accent spoon with simple stainless.
