French mixed metal (sterling and brass) art deco cake server details buy

French mixed metal (sterling and brass) art deco cake server, c1925

Harmony, artistry and creativity would all be appropriate descriptions for this unique cake server. The use of brass with silver is very pleasing… both sections are hallmarked with the same makers mark, “L&H.” The silver mark appears to be a serpent or cartouche. It’s difficult to read. Similar marks indicate silver content of 950. The reeds from the silver handle are echoed in the cutout on the blade. The Egyptian lotus motif on the blade is typical of the art deco era. The cake server has the same decoration on both sides, with the exception of the outline on the blade, which is only on the front.

As a general rule, one can never have enough cake servers. That’s not to say that we eat cake everyday. However, since we’d rather not bring the kitchen spatula to the dinner table, a cake server makes a wonderful substitute. Any food, appetizer or dessert that can be served with a flat utensil would provide a good occasion to use this lovely piece. The use of the brass allows you to “dress it up or dress it down.” This is truly an exceptional piece.
