Glass Kugel ball on a silver color base, Germany C1950
Kugel means ball in German. There are many famous Kugel balls, with the largest being in Pennsylvania. In Germany, even a Christmas ornament is considered a “kugel.” This one is a large hand-blown clear glass ball that was meticulously masked and painted in metallic gold to look like a checkered globe. To display it, we had a base made for it and painted it silver.
The effect of the gold on the clear glass is very cool. At every angle you see different patterns of the design showing through. It’s difficult to imagine how long it must have taken someone to create this unusual piece… or why! But it’s a wonderful thing and a great decorative piece.

Measurements: Both the ball and the base measure about 8 inches in diameter.
