Royal Bayreuth rectangular platter, “Beach Sand Babies” design, Bavaria c1910
Royal Bayreuth is the world’s most important maker of whimsical porcelain. Their pieces are in two variations… pieces that are shaped like interesting objects (leaves, lobsters, shells, etc) and pieces that have charming scenes on them. “Beach Sand Babies” is one of their most charming, although it’s not an easy one to find. This lovely platter is especially nice because it’s perfect for hanging on a wall… and we have put a removable frame on it. It has some slight condition issues that you’ll see when you look closely. It must have had some scratches at one time, which were touched up. The touch-up is noticeable on close examination. Also, the gold rim is worn.
These issues have been taken into account in our price. Many of the nicest Royal Bayreuth pieces sell for well over a thousand dollars. And this one is quite rare and lovely. The fact that it is so easy to display makes it even more desirable. It’s signed and has no cracks or breaks. The condition issues, we’ve mentioned aren’t noticeable until you look closely but are mentioned in the interest of full disclosure.
