Handmade wood and metal sculpture of Junker (ju 52) airplane, c1940
With access to woodworking materials and a metal shop, this model was crafted to approximate the Junker ju 52. Some artistic license was taken, probably due to the unavailability of materials. But it’s an interesting and artistic sculpture by an unknown artist… and it captures an important era in 20th century history. The Junker was Germany’s equivalent of the DC-3. It could carry 17 passengers and was developed in the 1930s. By 1939, over 1,000 had been fitted as bombers for temporary use by the Luftwaffe. By the end of WWII, almost 5,000 had been produced and had become the ”workhorse” of the Luftwaffe… used as bombers and for troop transport.
It’s an interesting and bold sculpture with some nice artistic details. The tail design, wing attachment, tri-motor arrangement, corrugated skin and general shape are consistent with the Junker… not that one has to be an aviation enthusiast to appreciate the artistic qualities of this sculpture.
